Social Listening: Target

New Target Stores and Facilities

I decided to choose Target as the brand/company for my social listening post. I choose it because of the recent controversy over their DEI initiatives, after pledging to promote more diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in 2022. Target has instead pushed back on its initiatives due to right-wing pressure to change its commitments to hiring diverse candidates and expanding access. People are outraged at this news because, in 2022 Target vowed to  “equitable access to career advancement” and “equitable business decisions that increase relevance with diverse guests and support economic inclusivity.” As well as in 2020, Target devoted to improving black representation in the company by nearly 20%. Target has stated that the company will quit participating in all external diversity-focused surveys and additionally assessing corporate partnerships while altering the title of "supplier diversity" to instead "supplier engagement". This is due to Target's leaning into conservative customer demand and lawsuits from conservative legal groups. Though Target is still declaring they are devoted to creating a "sense of belonging for both employees and customers via a commitment to inclusion". In 2023, Target Ceo Brian Cornell stated that emphasis on diversity, inclusion, and equity has boosted companies' growth over the last decade. I became interested in this topic, because it brings an interesting question, on if major companies are only promoting diversity initiatives for profits, instead of trying to be inclusive of other ethnicities. It also intrigued me how a business will change its goals and commitments depending on social and political pressure.

Target's brand promise is to "Expect More. Pay less." Target offers customers quality brands and products at affordable prices.  Target commitment welcomes all guests and brings them with ease, inspiration, and joy. Taking care of over 400,000 employees, and empowering them to make a difference in the world. Target claims to invest in opportunities to grow employees' careers, as well as take care of themselves and their families, making a difference for their guests and communities. Committed to serving and strengthening communities target operates in. Investing in sustainable practices that will positively impact the planet and people, generating long-term business value.

Many comments on Target's posts and related videos have been negative, warning others to be aware of the companies you are supporting. As well as to be mindful of the reasons the company is doing this isn't for inclusion but instead profits.

Target doesn't just sell one type of product but instead tries to sell a variety of products including food, clothing, house decor, electronics, toys, etc. On their social media, they are often promoting new clothing they have, or healthy products and snacks people will love and buy from one of their stores. Often using recent news like the Tiktok ban, to stay relevant and show they are a reliable company for all your needs.

Target's marketing is to focus on specific groups of people who are most likely to buy their products/services. They are to improve customer experiences through social media or personalized deals. Staying relevant, engagement, and personalization. By using online shopping to stay relevant and improve stores for improved customer experiences. Engaging on social media with funny comments, and posting relatable content on social media for their audience.

Target does respond to customers, often letting customers know when products are to be back in stock, and shipping time. Often ignoring most negative comments. I think it is a good decision to reply to your customers to explain, showing you care about your customers and helping make their customer experience better.

I wouldn't change my mind about my initiatives, because it shows what you stand for and how you are improving inclusions, regardless of pressure from conservative groups or lawsuit pressure.

I learned a lot about how business will change their minds to improve profits or social pressure. As well as all they do to improve customer experiences. Knowing a brand's values will let you know what the company stands for, helping you make your decision to support them or not. If they align with your own values, helping influence your purchasing decisions, or if they share any values with you.

Marketing in News - Super Bowl LIX: Tracking every ad

The article I chose was about Super Bowl LIX because what better way to advertise your business than on the big stage? Known to have some of the biggest brands from tech giants like Apple, to car companies like Toyota and Honda. Companies are willing to spend millions of dollars just to advertise during a yearly event for a 30-second advertisement that millions of Americans watch every year. High-profile companies, often use celebrities to appear in their ads, and advertisements are some of the most viewed videos on social media.

This year, the Super Bowl happens on February 9th, 2025. The company Fox, sold out all of its Super Bowl advertising inventory for just a 30-second advertisement for around $7 million. Brands have already started to reveal when they are supposed to appear during the Super Bowl. Just like how Sketchers announced their big plans for their company only three months after last year's appearance. Which can keep consumer interest in their brand. This seems to work as the 2024 Super Bowl, which was broadcast by CBS, had up to 115 million viewers.
As well as their being talks of their ongoing experimenting with using Artificial intelligence (AI). However, there is no clear intent on what the marketer's strategies will be for the upcoming event.  It will most likely be the common strategy of using celebrities to appear in advertising, though many believe this has become more overdone through the years.
This Super Bowl LIX halftime show will be headlined by Kendrick Lamar, Known to be one of the biggest artists of the past year, this is bound to increase viewership, from music enjoyers. Sponsored by Apple Music had had a decade-long run by Pepsi and its third consecutive year sponsoring. This year, the Super Bowl LIX will be played at Ceasars Superdome in New Orleans

The value proposition for the Super Bowl is its ability to provide its platform to brands, to use for exposure of their brands, to their huge audience.
As well as its ability to have memorable commercials that are seen for millions, for their products. This can mean unveiling a new product, or even a new sales strategy.

The biggest challenge for the Super Bowl is finding interest in the teams that are playing or finding artists for the halftime show that millions of viewers enjoy.

The marketing approach is unique because more people are interested in the advertising and the halftime show. With millions just tuning in for the commercials that companies make, they are known to be some of the best commercials of the year. Appealing to anyone of any age with companies like Disney for kids, and car companies for adults

The marketing solution is great because it has brands that appeal to customers' needs like insurance, or health companies that can be promoted through the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl is a great idea, but I often wonder why not advertise companies through selling merchandise like cups with sponsors on it?

I learned of the marketing strategy the Super Bowl has and how many brands use it to their advantage for brand exposure.

About Me: Brandon Tenorio

Hi! I'm Brandon, I am currently 20 years old and presently dual enrolled with OSU and Linn-Benton Community College. I am currently working on a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. I am interested in human resources, and I have spoken to individuals presently working in the field and found that it fits into what I want to do for my career.

I enrolled in this Marketing class because it was required, but also because I was interested in marketing if I didn't do HR. I know marketing is all around us which draws my attention and how it can not only help business grow by attracting new customers, but also how it can increase sales for a business. I also want to find out methods many businesses will use to get new customers, and how they use physiological techniques.

My passions include video games, fishing, learning to cook, and sports. I love to play games, especially with friends since we are usually too busy with work and school, but I also enjoy solo games like fromsoftware games (Elden ring, Sekiro, Bloodborne). I also started going fishing the past year with my cousins since it's peaceful and rewarding to catch fish. I also enjoy learning to cook since it's a skill that I don't really have but is important to have. My girlfriend loves to cook and bake so she has been helping me sharpen my skills. I enjoy watching soccer, basketball, MMA, and boxing, started getting into golf. I've played soccer my whole life thanks to my pops always playing in multiple teams, and my favorite team is Arsenal. I enjoy watching basketball, my favorite team is the Miami Heat. I also enjoy watching boxing and MMA fights with friends.

The last fish I caught was a bullhead :0
